Better food systems must include better lives for animals
Across Southeast Asia, food production is expanding rapidly to meet growing demand. The systems being built to deliver this growth are designed almost entirely around cost, supply stability, and nutrition, with little consideration of animal welfare standards. As a result, high-density, low-welfare farming models are being adopted at scale, contributing to immense animal suffering, climate impacts, and public health risks.
The systems taking shape today will determine how billions of farmed animals live for decades to come. FANSEA and its members are working to embed higher-welfare standards in both existing and future facilities while supporting alternative methods of food production.

FANSEA connects local organisations across Southeast Asia so they can share knowledge, coordinate advocacy, and develop practical solutions together. By combining local expertise with regional support, members can broaden their reach, work toward shared standards, and create more lasting change for farmed animals.
Since 2021, FANSEA’s member organisations have collectively improved the lives of more than 6.1 million animals. Members have secured farmed animal welfare indicators in Philippine national aquaculture standards, built the first laying hen welfare networks in Vietnam and Thailand, and translated global corporate commitments into local action in Indonesia.

A regional network built on local leadership
FANSEA, the Farmed Animal Network Southeast Asia, was established through World Animal Protection’s Investing in Others programme. This regranting initiative is supported by Coefficient Giving, formerly Open Philanthropy, and the Netherlands Postcode Lottery.
Since 2021, the programme has supported local civil society organisations across Southeast Asia in improving farmed animal welfare and advancing change within food systems. FANSEA connects regional and global ambitions with the realities of local communities.
